Study: Patients Heal Covid-19 Immune for 6 Months

TEMPO.CO. Jakarta – Research in England reveals that almost everyone who is infected Covid-19 has had high antibody levels in his body for at least six months. During this period antibodies may protect them from reinfection of the disease.

This study measured the rate of Covid-19 infection in populations across the UK. And how long the antibodies last in those who have been infected.

“The vast majority of people retain detectable antibodies for at least six months after being infected with the coronavirus,” said Naomi Allen, professor and chief scientist at the UK Biobank, where the research was carried out, as quoted by Reuters, February 3, 2021.

The results showed that among the participants who tested positive for previous Covid-19 infection, 99 percent maintained antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 for three months. After the full six months, 88 percent still have them.

“While we can’t be sure how this relates to immunity, the results suggest that people may be protected from subsequent infections for at least six months after natural infection,” Allen said.

He said the findings were in accordance with the results of other studies in England and Iceland. That previous study found that antibodies to the coronavirus tended to last for several months in those who already had the disease and get well.

Another study of British health workers whose results were published last month found that someone who has Covid-19 is most likely to be protected for at least five months. But the study also noted that those with antibodies may still be able to carry and spread the virus.

The UK Biobank study also found that a proportion of the UK population with antibody Covid-19 – a measure known as seroprevalence – rose from 6.6 percent at the start of the study period in May or June 2020 to 8.8 percent in November or December 2020. SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was most common in London, at 12, 4 percent, and least common in Scotland at 5.5 percent.
