Study Finds Can’t Do This Could Be A Sign That Death Is Near

Jakarta

Recent research has found that middle-aged people who can’t stand on one leg for 10 seconds or more could be a sign of imminent death.

Researchers in Brazil tracked 2,000 participants aged 50-75 and found that older adults who couldn’t do the flamingo pose were 84 percent more likely to die early than those who could.

The Daily Mail reports, during the study, which was conducted by researchers at the CLINIMEX Medical Exercise Clinic in Rio de Janeiro, monitoring each participant for an average of seven years. During those years 123 people died.

The results, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, showed that those who were unable to stand without support on one leg for 10 seconds were 84 percent more likely to die from any cause.

But the researchers stressed that does not mean balance problems are the real cause of death.

But lead researcher Dr Claudio Gil Araujo said a good level of balance is necessary for daily life and losing balance is ‘detrimental to health’.

“This is an observational study, and as such, cannot determine the cause,” said study author Dr. Claudio Gil Araujo, in a statement.

“Because the participants were all white Brazilians, these findings may not be applicable more broadly to other ethnicities and countries. And information about potentially influential factors, including history of recent falls, level of physical activity, diet, smoking , and the use of drugs that can disrupt the balance, is not available,” he explained.
