Stricter corona measures in the making: group size smaller and museums closed

With these measures, the current partial lockdown will be tightened. The measures were agreed this afternoon during informal consultation between the most involved ministers at the Catshuis. The measures will be worked out on Monday; The official decision and a press conference will follow on Tuesday.

Tightening

In the current plans, museums, libraries, cinemas and theaters will close for at least two weeks. The maximum number of people allowed on the street together will also be further reduced: from 4 to 2. The stricter measures will probably take effect from Thursday.

These tightening up are necessary to further limit the number of new infections. The ministers hope that with this intervention the r factor will decrease even further and will fall well below 1. This is necessary to contain the spread of the virus.

Regionally possibly even stricter

The ministers most involved also want to investigate whether even stricter measures can be taken regionally. This includes introducing a regional curfew or declaring an entire lockdown regionally.

Big discussion

The decision to take stricter measures was preceded by a heated discussion. Prime Minister Rutte, Deputy Prime Minister De Jonge and Minister Van Ark (Public Health) proposed closing the country for two weeks. The retail trade, such as shoe stores, should also close during that period.

This met with strong opposition from ministers Hoekstra (Finance), Grapperhaus (Justice) and Ollongren (Home Affairs), among others. They think this is going much too far and want to think carefully about the effects of such a serious intervention first.
