Kitten Hitchhikes NYC Subway, Finds Forever Home
Commuter Adopts Tiny Traveler Found on the Tracks
A lost kitten embarked on an unexpected journey through the New York City subway system on Thursday, July 24, ultimately leading to a heartwarming adoption by a commuting passenger.
Unplanned Subway Passenger
Video captured by TikTok user **Shaquantae McGee**, known online as Curtis Pocahontae (@Pocahontae), documented the small feline exploring a train car at the 110th Street station. The footage shows the kitten venturing along the platform before confidently boarding a waiting train.
“I was on an NYC subway when a kitten unexpectedly walked onto the train alone. The video captures the kitten exploring the car, and ends with a stranger stepping in to safely remove the cat,” **McGee** said.
The observant commuter, identified as **Betsaida Mercado**, took charge when the train reached the next stop. She exited the car with the tiny stowaway, a move that caused surprise among fellow passengers.

A New Beginning
In an update shared online, **Betsaida Mercado** revealed her decision to keep the kitten, who is now named Emmie, a nod to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The tiny feline is estimated to be only four to five weeks old and is scheduled for a veterinary check-up.
“I’ve never had a cat before, but she’s so precious. I love her,” **Mercado** shared, expressing her affection for her new pet.
Animal shelters often see an influx of strays, particularly during warmer months. In 2023, the ASPCA reported that approximately 3.2 million cats enter U.S. animal shelters annually.
This fortunate kitten’s tale highlights the unexpected connections that can form even in the bustling environment of public transit.
