Strawberry prices are starting to decline. Even PLN 3.5 per kilogram. The farther from the “capital of strawberries”, the more expensive

The beginning of the season on strawberries abounded in high prices – the calculations of Jakub Olipra from Credit Agricole show that they were up to 20 percent. higher than last year. In the last few days, however, the prices of a single donut have started to fall. Currently, they are at a different level, and the location of the point of sale is of key importance.

A kilo of strawberries for PLN 3.5. Customers bought them in bulk

According to the industry portal sad24.pl, strawberry prices have reached an exceptionally low price in Nowy Przybojewo (Mazowieckie Voivodeship). A kilogram of strawberries was sold at the municipal market at a price ranging from 3.5 to 6 zlotys. This means that one had to pay from 7 to 12 zlotys for one wedding. Low prices of strawberries attracted many buyers who bought them in bulk and then sell them at higher prices in other regions of Poland.

Strawberry prices remain high. Grower: They want to earn, but that’s an exaggeration

Short price Strawberries in Nowy Przybojewo are partly a consequence of the proximity of Czerwińsk on the Vistula, which is the largest, but not the only, Polish strawberry basin. The further away from “the capital of Polish strawberries”, the higher the prices of fruit. Already in the town of Bronisze near Warsaw (approx. 60 km from Nowy Przybojewo) it can be seen that the prices are higher. For a kilo of strawberries, we will pay there from 5 to 12.5 PLN, i.e. 10-25 PLN for a chip shop. Similar prices can be found at the market in Elizówka near Lublin.

Why is the price of strawberries so high this year?

As we wrote in Gazeta.pl, high strawberry prices and their slow decline are largely a consequence of the cold spring. This year’s April was the coldest in the whole of the 21st century. The average temperature was 6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.6 degrees lower than the April long-term average temperature for the period 1991-2020. In the opinion of IMWM, “this year’s April should be classified as extremely cold months”.

The weather meant that strawberries appeared later and there are fewer of them than in the previous year. Even in mid-May, the price of a kilo of strawberries fluctuated around PLN 30, which translates into PLN 60 for a chip basket. You could see this price, among others in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship and Lower Silesia. However, experts reassure that in cold seasons, the supply of strawberries increases as the temperature rises, and their price on the market begins to decline.
