Stranger Things Spin-Off Details: Anthology Series Inspired by Twin Peaks

“Stranger Things” Spin-Off Series to Embrace “Twin Peaks” Anthology Format, Finn Wolfhard Reveals

Los Angeles, California – November 14, 2025 – A live-action spin-off series for the hit Netflix show “Stranger Things” is in progress and will adopt an anthology format inspired by David Lynch’s iconic series “Twin Peaks,” actor Finn Wolfhard revealed in a recent interview. The news offers the frist considerable details about the project sence co-creator Matt Duffer hinted at its unique direction in 2022.

Netflix initially announced the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” would be released in three volumes, culminating in an epic finale. While the original series, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, and David Harbour, is nearing its conclusion, the franchise’s expansion signals Netflix’s commitment to the “Stranger Things” universe. The final season premieres November 26th, 2025.

Speaking with Variety on November 13th, Wolfhard, who portrays Mike Wheeler, described the spin-off as a departure from the established narrative structure. “Like David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Sort of an anthology and different tones, but [a] similar universe or [the] same universe,” he explained. “I think set in different places and all tied together through this mythology of the Upside Down.”

The anthology approach suggests each season or installment could explore different facets of the “Stranger Things” mythology, possibly focusing on new characters and locations connected to the Upside Down. Wolfhard indicated that the creative team is considering the existence of multiple research facilities similar to Hawkins National Laboratory, suggesting potential storylines in locations like Russia and beyond. He specifically mentioned the possibility of labs in other countries, expanding the scope of the series’ central mystery.

While the involvement of original cast members remains uncertain, Wolfhard noted that contingency plans were discussed. “don’t even talk about Hawkins. Don’t have any mention of our characters,” he stated, implying a intentional effort to establish the spin-off as a distinct entity. “They were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them. I’m sure they do, and I’m sure it will happen, but there’s nothing official.”

The original “Stranger Things” series, created by the Duffer Brothers (Matt and Ross Duffer), premiered in 2016 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, lauded for its nostalgic 1980s aesthetic and supernatural storyline. The spin-off’s shift towards a 1990s-inspired anthology format suggests a deliberate evolution of the franchise’s creative direction.
