Storm sweeps across Austria: thousands of households without electricity

The storm front reached the state of Salzburg in the early hours of Tuesday and uprooted or bent trees, especially in Flachgau. There were power outages in Flachgau and Tennengau, affecting around 1,500 households. The fire brigade deployed to a total of 65 missions shortly before 10 a.m., said a spokesman for the state fire service command.

The strongest gusts of wind should have reached a speed of 100 to 110 km / h, the highest measured wind speed in the lowlands was in Mattsee (Flachgau) at 90 km / h, at Salzburg Airport it was 85 km / h, said Bernhard Niedermoser from ZAMG Salzburg. The wind peaks were even higher on the mountains: 115 km / h were measured on the Kolomansberg near Thalgau, 140 km / h on the Feuerkogel in neighboring Upper Austria.

In Wals a tree fell on a car, according to the first information, nobody was injured. Fallen trees also cut power lines, leaving around 1,500 households without electricity since the morning hours. The communities of Hallwang, Hof, Faistenau and St. Gilgen as well as St. Jakob am Thurn and the Wiestal were affected. The technicians of Salzburg Netz GmbH worked on eliminating the malfunctions.
