Stop pharmacists and family doctors: vaccines go ahead slowly

Previously there were no doses, now there are no vaccinators. While the Modern practice has finally been unlocked – with 24,500 doses that will be delivered by Thursday by the express courier of the Italian Post Office in the hospital pharmacies of the nine Sicilian provinces and another 10 thousand of Astrazeneca arriving – it will not start before Easter with the involvement of the professional categories who have given the willingness to vaccinate. Or, rather, the “people” of about five thousand vaccinators, including general practitioners and dentists, would be ready to leave tomorrow with vaccinations to be done especially at home for the elderly, but also in vaccination hubs and in their studies, if needed. But everything is still standing. And it is not enough, to make up for the delays in the campaign, the overwork in the vaccination hubs, yesterday all open until 10 pm to welcome those who had been canceled the appointment for the temporary stop at AstraZeneca.

Although the agreement with general practitioners was reached on March 8 and the memorandum of understanding with dentists dates back to January 8, signed by the councilor for Health Razza, the sending of guidelines from part of the Region to health companies on how to involve the categories. Only then will the Asps be able to publish the notice through which doctors must give their availability. From the Health Department they let it be known that “the guidelines should be sent by mid-week”. Also without prejudice to the agreement with pharmacists, who have made their pharmacies available as vaccination centers, and the agreement with entrepreneurs who are ready to deploy their spaces as hubs. The signature is missing in both cases. Of course, if the Draghi government’s diktat is to speed up vaccines now that the doses arrive, new vaccinators must be put on track immediately.

Reinforcements after Easter

First of all the guidelines must be sent. That the Region should send to companies within the middle of the week. Then the availability notice can be published. The recruitment of vaccinators will last approximately one week. Doing the math, we won’t leave before Easter. It is estimated that about 80 percent of the 5,800 general practitioners and about 500 of the 4 thousand Sicilian dentists will join. “We are immediately available to go to patients’ homes, but also at the Fiera in Palermo and in the other hubs in Sicily – says Gigi Tramonte, regional secretary of Fimmg, the trade association – but the agreement signed on March 8 is not still been published in the Official Gazette. The urgent thing, however, are the guidelines, without them everything is still ». The same goes for dentists: “We are waiting for the Region to tell us what to do,” says Mario Marrone, president of the Palermo Order. Pharmacists met Councilor Razza on 18 March and made more than 1,500 pharmacies available as vaccination sites. However, the agreement has not yet been signed. “We have laid the foundations of the protocol,” says the president of Federfarma Gioacchino Nicolosi. They will meet again tomorrow.

The agreement with businesses

The draft of the agreement with the companies headed by Sicindustria, Confindustria Catania and Confapi Sicilia has not yet been signed on the council’s table, ready to immediately offer their spaces as a hub for vaccinating employees and families. There is a total of about 1,500 companies, with over a million people to be vaccinated. «We can also provide doctors and paramedics who are part of our circuit of private clinics and Rsa – says the leader of the industrialists, Alessandro Albanese – and we are ready to make our companies available also for non-members. Absolutely free. The economy must restart as soon as possible ». Albanese pushes for Sicily to speed up the restart in safety, especially in view of the summer, to ensure that this is not another black year on the tourism front. “The involvement of private individuals in the vaccination plan could be the turning point to accelerate the campaign and return to normality.” A turning point without times and methods, not yet established. “We must sign the agreement, we await news from the Region.”
The vaccination plan of the Draghi government, net of the delays due to the 4-day stop of Astrazeneca, is restarting. Prime Minister Draghi and Covid Emergency Commissioner Figliuolo continue to reiterate that we must accelerate so that in September we can reach 80 percent of Italians vaccinated. The watchword is that we need to change pace: more vaccines and more vaccinators. Which in Sicily there are. Blocked, however, from sending a circular.
