Banda Aceh, InfoPublik – After being declared an extraordinary incident with the findings of polio survivors in Pidie District, the Aceh Health Service moved quickly, one of which was to suspend polio immunization.

This was stated by the head of the Aceh Health Bureau, Dr. Hanif during a press conference to reporters, in the hall of the Aceh Health Office, on Monday (21/11/2022).

He said the implementation of this mass vaccination was a pre-emptive step by the government to prevent transmission of the polio virus after a case was discovered in Aceh.

Kadinkes went on to explain that, after the discovery and determination of the outbreak, his group went through several stages of management, especially the search for possible survivors or other infected children. Thank God, we have no results.

The next step is to carry out an outbreak response immunization (ORI) or an immunization response to an outbreak.

“We plan to carry out mass immunization on November 28 in Pidie, for one week. This will continue for the whole of Aceh starting on December 5. We carry out drip polio targeting all children under the age of 12,” he has declared.

The implementation of ORI is aimed at preventing the transmission of polio to Acehnese children. But this implementation is still awaiting instructions from the Center which is also awaiting authorization from the WHO (World Health Organization).

On this occasion, Aceh Kadinkes explained the initial finding, namely, patient AK, aged 7, had fever on Oct. 6, then appeared joint pain and limb weakness on Oct. 9, 2022. The patient was referred to the TCD Sigli Hospital on October 18, 2022.

Pediatricians immediately conduct physical exams, laboratory tests, and medical care. Despite clinical improvement, muscle atrophy occurs causing the child to drag on his left leg.

The laboratory examination of the stool sample was carried out at the Laboratory of Prof. Sri Oemjati, Ministry of Health BKPK on 27th October 2022 (the examination process takes a minimum of 10 working days) and the examination results were published on November 8, 2022, he showed the presence of polio virus type 2.

Results of a follow-up whole genome sequencing (WGS) examination at the Biofarma laboratory on Nov. 10 confirmed the presence of polio virus type 2 in the stool sample.

“To all of this, we take our hats off (respect) and thank surveillance for responding quickly. Because not all of the polls this year are about polio,” he said. (04/finger)
