Stephen Colbert Celebrates ‘Late Show‘ Emmy win With Dig at Donald Trump
NEW YORK – Stephen Colbert marked The Late Show’s recent Emmy win for Outstanding Variety Talk Series with a pointed jab at Donald Trump during Monday’s monologue, referencing the former president’s repeated complaints about the awards show. The victory, Colbert emphasized, was a team effort, extending gratitude to the extensive crew and, playfully, claiming the award for the audience before declaring he would “keep it.”
Colbert’s comments followed the show’s win, a moment he described as “incredible,” noting the team produces the show “every day.” He acknowledged the contributions of the stage crew, production staff, talent, editors, band, control room, props, graphics, research, digital, accounting, legal, wardrobe, make-up, security, maintenance, assistants, interns, and the audience department. “You, the audience, you peopel here, you people out there, you are the ones who ultimately make this show possible, so this belongs to you too, but I’m gonna keep it,” he quipped.
The host also jokingly threatened anyone attempting to touch his Emmy, stating he ”will jab your eyes out with the wings right there.” He extended gratitude to the Television Academy, Emmy producers, and fellow nominees Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel.
The Emmy win arrived after Trump publicly celebrated reports of the show’s potential cancellation in July, writing on Truth Social, “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next.Has even less talent than Colbert! [Fox News late night host] Greg gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.”
Colbert concluded the segment by highlighting trump’s own lack of an Emmy. While Trump has never won, he received two nominations for best reality competition program for The Apprentice in 2004 and 2005.
trump has a history of alleging the Emmys are “rigged” against him,a claim he made during a 2016 presidential debate with Hillary Clinton. Clinton referenced Trump’s past complaints, stating, “There was even a time when he didn’t get an Emmy for his TV program … and he started tweeting that the Emmys were rigged against him.” Trump responded, ”Shoudl have gotten it.”
