Statements by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, N. Dendias at the opening and at the end of his meeting with His Beatitude the Archbishop of Athens and all Greece, Ieronymos II (Αthènes, 09.04.2021) – Press releases

“Monsignor, thank you,
The week ahead will be very difficult. Monday I will go to western Libya, to Benghazi where we are going to open a Consulate. There are Greeks living there and we just met them with the Prime Minister on our trip.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Libya was constructive. He was able to reestablish previously blocked communication channels. They are starting to normalize which is also to their benefit. Because what we support is also in their own interests. It is about a country which wants to become again a State and which wishes the withdrawal of the foreign powers. What’s more normal ?
And, of course, this Wednesday I will go to Ankara. If Turkey shows good behavior, I will go and I hope that we can restart the dialogue again. I am not too optimistic, however it would be good to have the possibility of having a dialogue and, of course, always in accordance with reason and the law. Because it will be useless to discuss, if we have to do it under arbitrary conditions.
And, certainly, I do not hide from you that before going to Ankara, I will go to Istanbul, I will make my sign of the cross at the Phanar and I will speak with the Patriarch.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Dendias made the following statement:
“It was a great pleasure coupled with a great honor to be received by His Beatitude the Archbishop and to have had the opportunity to brief him on general questions, on national issues falling within the competence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is always a great pleasure for me to talk to His Beatitude and to have a sincere discussion with him. As is well known to all, I think His Beatitude and the Church of Greece in general have a keen interest in national matters.
Monsignor, I thank you for this opportunity that you have given me ”.
