The State Police has handed over the criminal proceedings for the murder of a lawyer and former judge Bērziņš, which was committed in Mārupe last year, in connection with the robbery, and informed the police.

Two people currently in custody have been arrested on suspicion of committing the crime.

On the late evening of July 20, 2019, two men in masks stormed a private house in Mārupe, where a woman in a house was tied up to rob that house. Shortly afterwards, a lawyer born in 1972 came home with his wife. One of the robbers shot a lawyer, after which the two men in masks fled the scene. The lawyer, on the other hand, later died of his injuries at the hospital.

During the initial investigation and operational search, the suspects were initially unable to be identified, but police officers continued to investigate the crime and identify the perpetrators during a large-scale pre-trial investigation during the year.

During the pre-trial investigation, law enforcement officers found that the crime was most likely committed by persons unrelated to the victim’s family, namely men born in 1967 and 1982, who had previously been brought to the attention of the police on several occasions, both for property and other crimes. against the life and health of persons.

The investigation also revealed that the men were involved in a number of other crimes, including property and crimes against the life and health of individuals.

“We had already detained them on 6 January and they were arrested by a court on 8 January. And all this time we were working to gather evidence, despite the state of emergency in the country, which also complicated our work. One is a criminal born in 1967. The other is 1982. The youngest spent 15 years in prison, convicted of murder, robbery, convicted of property crimes, convicted of drugs.

Both men are charged with aggravated murder, robbery, theft, money laundering, deliberate destruction and damage to property and illicit trafficking in firearms.

During the investigation, it was established that both detainees were involved in a number of other serious crimes in various regions of Latvia. These cases are still under investigation.
