State farm Seeks to Avoid Coverage in Crystal Rogers Wrongful Death Suit
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – State Farm Fire and Casualty Company is attempting to avoid potential financial duty in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Sherry Ballard, mother of Crystal rogers. rogers, who disappeared over a decade ago and is presumed deceased, was allegedly murdered by Brooks Houck, who was convicted in July and sentenced to life in prison.
Ballard, acting as administrator of her daughter’s estate, initiated the lawsuit in November 2023, seeking damages related to rogers’ death. these damages include funeral and administrative costs, compensation for pain and suffering experienced by Rogers before her death, lost wages, and loss of enjoyment of life.
On December 4, 2025, State Farm filed a motion to intervene in the case. The company argues that Houck’s renter’s insurance policy, which includes liability coverage, does not extend to the claims made in the lawsuit. State Farm contends its policy covers only accidental bodily injury or property damage, and specifically excludes intentional acts, as alleged in the suit against Houck.
According to a statement from State Farm’s legal team, the company aims to “participate in discovery and file a dispositive motion on State Farm’s coverage obligation.”
A court hearing regarding State Farm’s motion to intervene is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
