Starting this summer, a new astronomical observatory will launch in Baie-Saint-Paul.

Telescopes hold no secrets for Hugues Lacombe. Passionate about stars and space since childhood, he has been involved over the years in organizations related to this science of star observation. The adopted Charlevoisien recently participated in the creation of the Charlevoix astronomy club.

“Our mission is to popularize science, that is, to explain to people the universe in which everyone lives. Second is to do astronomical observation,” he says.

The group celebrated its 5e birthday Saturday. Forming more than 50 members, the club dreamed of an observation center in Baie-Saint-Paul. Their wish will finally be fulfilled.

“For those who are interested in the solar system, they will be satisfied with the astronomical observatory center project”, launches the mayor, Michael Pilote.

“It’s really a major achievement”, rejoices Mr. Lacombe

His followers did not sit idly by, staring at the sky. They assume the costs associated with the necessary equipment. A total of $20,000 was raised.

“Since 2019, we first carried out a fundraising campaign to buy the equipment, namely the telescopes and the astronomical telescope”, explains the man who holds the position of president of the club.

The City, for its part, will acquire the 15-foot-diameter observatory. After consideration, the Saint-Laurent Pavilion sector was determined as the reception area.

“There were pros and cons for each site. We wanted a site that was also accessible to the population and a site where the light was lower, ”says the mayor.

“This is where starry evenings will be held,” says Mr. Lacombe, who promises that the two astronomical observatories in Charlevoix will complement each other.

With these facilities, the Club hopes to attract curious young people, including the mayor!

“The astronomical system is still not in my strings, I will make sure to learn a little more about our solar system,” he promises.

Moreover, both the city and the club would like to inaugurate this observatory by July this summer. However, compliance with deliveries will be necessary to achieve this.
