Start of the season will be ‘race against the clock’ for AZ attacker Stengs | NOW

AZ may not have Calvin Stengs at the official start of the season. The attacker is struggling with an injury and does not yet appear on the training field.

“He is still training indoors. It will be a race against the clock for him,” AZ trainer Arne Slot told Saturday FOX Sports after the 1-0 lost exhibition game against FC Utrecht.

21-year-old Stengs has so far missed the entire preparation. This also applies to teammates Ron Vlaar and Myron Boadu, although their situation seems a bit rosier than that of Stengs.

“I thought last week that Myron could join the training again, but he hasn’t done that yet,” said Slot. “Hopefully it will be possible next week. He is already training outside with the physiotherapist, just like Ron.”

The AZ season will start at the end of this month with games in the second heat of the Champions League. It is not yet known who the opponent of the Alkmaarders is.

So far, the preparation has certainly not gone smoothly for AZ. The Slot team already lost 0-1 against KRC Genk last week and therefore lost on Saturday with the same figures from FC Utrecht.
