The world’s largest beverage retailer, Starbucks will join the list of corporate entities that will stop advertising on the social media platform Facebook. The coffee giant said that it opposes hatred and trust, both business leaders and policy makers must unite to influence real change.

“We will suspend advertising on all social media platforms while we continue discussions internally, with our media partners and with civil rights organizations in an effort to stop the spread of hate speech,” the blog post was quoted as saying from The Verge in Jakarta, Monday (6/29/2020).

A Starbucks spokesman told The Verge that pausing ads on social media does not include YouTube, meanwhile Starbucks will continue to post to social media and not do paid promotions.

Starbucks did not officially join the “Stop Hate For Profit“organized by the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP and other social justice organizations.

This campaign is aimed specifically at Facebook and its moderate policies such as threats of violence, misinformation and hate speech, and calls to boycott ads on the platform for July. Unilever, Verizon, Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, Magnolia Pictures, Honda and Hershey have all signed campaigns Stop Hate for Profit.

On the height of the boycott, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook will also ban ads that contain racial, ethnic, national origin, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, gender identity or immigration status as a threat to others.

Mark Zuckerberg also announced a series of changes last week that were not directly in response to an advertiser boycott, while overcoming some criticism of company policy.

“Facebook stands at the forefront of voting for people, especially those who don’t power in voicing, or as a power to share their experiences, “Zuckerberg said at a company meeting.

“It’s very important for us to make sure our platform meets these principles.” add it again.
