‘Staff in several healthcare sectors drop out in second corona wave’

If there is a second corona wave, not only will hospital staff be at risk of illness, but will also occur in mental health care (mental health care), care for the disabled, nursing home care and home care. This says healthcare collective Stichting IZZ, which advocates more support for healthcare personnel in times of a corona crisis, Trouw reports.

“40 percent of employees have been in contact with corona. That is quite a lot. They all indicate that they have had shocking experiences ”, says Roland Kip of IZZ. As a result, they experienced a high workload and a feeling of powerlessness. Of the care providers who worked overtime, 50 percent received financial compensation. “That seems nice, but sometimes time for time is better. In addition, staff have worked with fear of contamination. Not only for themselves, but especially fear of making others sick. ”

Holidays bring only a little and temporary rest

Healthcare providers also had a holiday this summer, but corona was never far away. Many celebrated their holiday in their own country and letting go of the news is even more difficult. Maybe they are temporarily rested, but not for long because there isn’t really much time to rest. A second corona wave is imminent and therefore extra support is now needed. Psychological support, to be precise. And that starts with the manager. According to IZZ, it is important to train managers to discuss shocking experiences and ask for help.

Delete deductible

Kip of IZZ also thinks that the deductible should be deleted for healthcare personnel. “We argue that the government organizes that the deductible is compensated this year and possibly next year. Then you can still discuss whether this should apply to the entire healthcare system, or only to staff who have been in contact with corona. ”
