Stade Rennes, RC Vannes, Brest Bretagne Handball… What end-of-season results for Breton clubs?

While all the team sports seasons have come to an end in France, and while the baccalaureate exams are continuing, we had fun awarding a mention to each Breton team playing among the elite of its sport. Nobody is flunked since no team has been demoted to the lower division this season. For the rest, the Breton clubs have had mixed fortunes.

THE celtigirls, as they are calledfinished their championship, the D1 Arkéma, in the 8e place (out of 12), but 16 points behind the 7e (Rheims). The Bretons have long been threatened by the red zone, in a season without big disappointment but without a bang either. With the recruitment of Bordelaise Marine Perenoa, the EAG will try to do better next year. Resumption of the championship on September 10

Fourth in league 1 and 8e finalist of the league Europe, THE Red and black enchanted all of football France with a well-polished collective game. Bruno Génésio’s team also finished with the 2e best attack in the championship (82 goals in 38 matches). We can only regret that the Bretons lost a few points on the way which deprives them of the Champions League, the controversial elimination against Leicester in 8e final, and especially the defeat in the first round of the Coupe de France in Nancy.

THE hake like to be scared. For the second year in a row, they played the maintenance until the end of the season, finally finishing the season in 16th place. The Morbihannais have the worst attack in the championship with Metz (35 goals, an average of 0.92 per game).
Consequence of this laborious season: coach Christophe Pélissier was dismissed and replaced by Régis Le Bris, director of the training center.

Author of a catastrophic start to the season, the Brest stadium had to wait for their new coach, Michel Der Zakarian, to put the dots back on the i’s to start his season…. At the end of October 2021. From then on, the Finisterians alternated the good and the less good but gradually settled comfortably in the soft underbelly of the championship.
After having recorded the construction of a new stadium which will be delivered in 2026, with a cost which risks limiting recruitment, the stadium is preparing to play maintenance again next season.

« When you’ve tasted the caviar, it’s hard to go back to the pâté “. This popular expression suits the feelings that may have animated the supporters of BBH this season.
In 2021, the Finisteriennes had won almost everything: championship, Coupe de France, finalist in the Champions League. This season, they are “only” finalists in the league, ¼ finalists in the Champions League and in the Coupe de France (forfeit against Besançon).

The BBH is also the only team to have beaten Metz this season. So mention good for the girls of Brest, who had still lost one of their best assets in the person of Ana Gros.

The club staff told us at the start of the season: this season, the objective is still maintenance, but from February-March. The club wanted to know more about the agonizing, even stifling end of the season, with a spring under the persistent threat of relegation.
Miraculous last season, where the club could even have shut down, the irreducible Bretons have completed a good financial year 2021-2022. They wanted to play the end of the season without pressure? Mission accomplished.

After a little relaxation in March-April, when we almost began to dream of Europe, the Cessonnais fell into line but finished the season well, in 9th place (out of 16). And can boast of sacred victories, at the Glaz Arena, over teams like Nantes or Aix-en-Provence.

Team under reconstruction, but still with several internationals in its ranks, such as Caroline Drouin or Elisa Riffonneau (selected for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in October 2022), the Rennes rugby stadium could not claim to play better than the maintenance this season, among the 14 best teams in France. It’s good, but we hope for better from this club because the Breton breeding ground is important.

In June 2021, the RC Valves had glimpsed the Top14. They were close to a historic rise in the elite of French rugby, reserved for clubs in the South and Paris.

This season, the Morbihannais seem to have suffered the backlash of this lost hope. Authors of a catastrophic start to the season – 6 defeats in 6 matches – Jean-Noël Spitzer’s players will not even ensure their maintenance in Pro D2 only three days from the end.
Far, far from the ambitions of the club. The only small glimmer of hope: the arrival of Francisco Gorrissen, Argentinian third line, new strong man of the team and who would have the level to play in Top14. But he extended with Vannes for the coming season.

The REC Rugby is not an elite club in its sport, far from it, but excellent mention all the same for this Fédérale1 team which almost managed a clear round and won its ticket for the National (the equivalent of the 3e division in France). The last victory ended under the golds and chandeliers of the town hall of Rennes.

The Landerneau players, who played in the European Cup last year, had a very difficult season and had to wait for the last game of the play-downs to win their stay in the LFB, Ligue de Bretagne de Basket.
Iconic coach Erwan Croguennec promises a stronger squad for next season.
