Staatsbosbeheer places a webcam at nesting ospreys in De Biesbosch | NOW

From Sunday, people can watch nesting ospreys in De Biesbosch National Park via the Beleef de Lente website of Vogelbescherming Nederland. According to Staatsbosbeheer, the birds of prey can return to the park at any time after a wintering in Africa.

Ospreys have been successfully breeding in the Netherlands since 2016. Last year there were three breeding pairs that each gave birth to three young. According to the Bird Protection, De Biesbosch is the only nature reserve in our country where migratory birds breed.

Staatsbosbeheer is happy with the webcam. “The fact that you can enjoy ospreys in the Netherlands is already unique, but that you can watch the nest from your living room, is of course great”, says forester Harm Blom. In addition to the webcam, Vogelbescherming will post weekly blogs and fragments on the website of beleefdelente.nl.

The webcam is located where the breeding area started and where it has been since the beginning a German male broods. That osprey was ringed in 2012 in Rogatz, Germany, about 550 kilometers from De Biesbosch.

According to conservationists, the Brabant park is a suitable place for the ospreys because of the freshwater times area, where there is both ebb and flow. In the shallow lagoons, channels and mud flats, the birds catch large roaches and bream.

In addition to the ospreys, many other birds can also be followed via the webcams of the Vogelbescherming. Hundreds of thousands of people follow the birds every year during the breeding season.
