SSD drive failure will destroy computers in October

An update can prevent SSDs from breaking, but it must be installed before disaster strikes. After this it is impossible to apply the update.

Due to the bug, the SSD drives suddenly stop working after being used for 40,000 hours. That is a period of almost five years. HPE thinks the first machines may be affected in October this year: 40,000 hours after the first copies went over the counter.

Multiple brands and companies

Not only HPE disks are affected. The company bought them from a party where other manufacturers and customers also purchase, which may cause other companies to have the same problem.

A crashing SSD drive can have serious consequences for your computer. Not only can you lose data, but your entire operating system can disappear after such a crash. You then have to insert a new SSD and install everything from scratch.

Second time

This is the second time that HPE SSDs have been affected by such a bug. In late 2019, the company reported a similar bug that caused certain storage media to fail after 32,768 hours. But while both bugs are similar, HPE emphasizes that they have nothing to do with each other.

On the HPE website is a list of all SSDs affected by this bug. If yours is in between, you can also immediately download and install an update on the same page.
