Sports Illustrated puts transgender model on the cover

On Instagram, the supermodel writes that she is very honored to be on the front page of the magazine. “The SI team has created a groundbreaking song by bringing together a diverse group of talented, beautiful women in a creative and dignified way,” she shares with a photo from the shoot. “I feel strong and inspired to fight not only for me, but for anyone who is facing discrimination.

The magazine has long wanted to collaborate with Valentina because of her activist attitude. Especially for Brazil, where the model comes today, her voice is of global importance. There is still no safe climate in the country and transgender people are regularly murdered.

“I was very happy when I heard the news. It didn’t seem real, ”Valentina explains People Magazine. “I’ve always dreamed of doing this. Sports Illustrated means a lot to me. I used to associate the magazine with fear and not belonging. But getting a place in the book, which is now so focused on diversity, changes my life. ”

It is not the first time that Valentina has made headlines. In 2017, she was the first transgender model to shine on the cover of the French Vogue and her work for Victoria’s Secret was another move for the brand. Marketing boss Ed Razek said earlier that there was no place for transgender people within the lingerie brand.

There is a shift in the fashion world. For example, Gucci previously chose a model with Down syndrome.
