The accreditation procedure for sex education associations announced since 2019 is still a long time coming
Vienna (OTS / SK) – SPÖ equal treatment spokesman Mario Lindner draws a sad balance after the first teaching committee with the new education minister Polaschek. After almost one and a half years of total failure in fighting pandemics in the education sector, the federal government’s total failure has also continued in other educational policy issues: An SPÖ application to implement the accreditation procedure for sex education associations in schools of the ÖVP and the Greens, which was announced in 2019 by Polaschek’s predecessor Faßmann, became easy adjourned. “Since the debate about the Teen Star association in the 2018/2019 school year, the federal government has not been able to finally ensure quality sexual education in schools. The announced accreditation process should have started before the outbreak of the pandemic, in autumn 2019 – and nothing has happened until today except for announcements. The motto ‘sit out and look away’ in the turquoise-green education policy is apparently not only limited to the corona situation in schools, but is also continued in sexual education, “says Lindner. “The fact that our application was simply postponed unfortunately clearly shows that no one is interested in a quick solution, especially in the ÖVP and the Ministry of Education!” ****
The announcement of an accreditation procedure for external associations that offer sex education workshops in schools was made by the former Federal Minister Faßmann in spring 2019 – after about a year of looking the other way in the Teen Star case. The implementation, which should have taken place at the beginning of the 2019/2020 school year, has been postponed again and again. The time of the corona pandemic was also not used to start the necessary implementation steps. According to a query response from June 2021, the process should now start in the middle of the current school year. When the first clubs will be “accredited” and what the corresponding procedure should look like, however, remains uncertain. “Especially the question of sexuality and self-determination are essential for the development of young people. Ensuring sexual education without prejudice on the basis of science and the best possible educational standards is one of the core tasks of school policy – unfortunately this government apparently has no interest in it. Just as little as the necessary financing for these offers ”, says Lindner. The SPÖ MP therefore wants to know with further parliamentary questions how exactly the next steps the Ministry of Education will take on this issue – should there be any at all. (Conclusion) lp
