The director of “Inside Man”, “Old Boy”, “BlacKkKlansman” braved confinement to film a New York on hiatus.

It is on his Instagram account that the famous director posted this 3:30 minute mini-film in which he declares his love for New York, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic in the United States.

Spike Lee should be presiding over the Cannes Film Festival, instead he is confined to his home in New York. During his outings, he takes the time to film a city that is dear to his heart.

In this mini-film we find all the emblematic places of New York: the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Wonder Wheel Park, the Wall Street subway, the Brooklyn Bridge, the streets of Harlem … Through these images, we discover a city at a standstill. The Big Apple is still confined, it reigns an unreal calm for a city usually so alive.

I wanna to wake up, in a city that doesn’t sleep

The second part of the mini-film is devoted to New Yorkers who are on the front line in this coronavirus pandemic. Spike Lee pays a heartfelt tribute to those men and women who fight the virus every day and ensure that the rest of the city can continue to live from their homes: firefighters, paramedics, nursing staff, pharmacies, the “everyday heroes” of a city under confinement.

In soundtrack, we can hear the iconic song “New-York, New-York” by Frank Sinatra. Listening to this sweet melody, we can’t help but think that we too would like to be able to wake up tomorrow “in a city that never sleeps”. We can’t wait for New York and all the other cities in the world to finally come out of containment.
