Spellbreak closes next year

After four years of development, the Proletariat studio has announced that the magic fighting game Spellbreak will officially close in early 2023. The game is dying out, as a new entry on the title blog. As for the exact reasons for the closure, for now they seem to be tied to the fact that Blizzard intends to acquire Proletariat, as reported from GamesBeat.

Proletariat’s own statement on the closure of Spellbreak states that “it has been an ambitious project in which our team has pushed the limits of design and development, and we are excited to continue innovating in the creation of new titles in the future.”

A follow-up post on Reddit of the general director of Proletariat, Seth Sivakadd a little more context to the news.

“Unfortunately, the video game industry is a tough business. Spellbreak was not able to break through and reach a sustainable place where we could continue to invest in it in the way we had dreamed of. We chose a tough path as an independent studio and decided to compete with some of the biggest games in the world. While we couldn’t get the push we needed, I don’t regret the bold decisions we made to bring Spellbreak to life.”

The news that the developer is going to be acquired by Blizzard has not yet been formally announced, but as GamesBeat reports, this will be the largest acquisition Blizzard has ever made and will help the studio continue to meet its time and quality goals. World of Warcraft, more specifically in the future Dragonflight expansion.
