Speech by King Willem-Alexander tonight, ‘It will be about feelings and emotions’

King Willem-Alexander addresses the country tonight in response to the crisis surrounding the corona virus. That is at 7 pm; the speech will be broadcast on NPO 1, NPO Radio 1, NPO Nieuws (with sign language interpreter) and nos.nl.

It is special that the king addresses the people. It is not common. The last time we saw Willem-Alexander on television in this way, outside of his Christmas talks, was in 2014 after the disaster with flight MH17.

His mother, Princess Beatrix, in her time as Queen, has only been on television once with an inserted speech, outside of her abdication speech. That was in 2009. Then she addressed the people shortly after the attack on the royal family in Apeldoorn during Queen’s Day.

Not a queen of the cameras

Beatrix did experience many more disasters, where a speech on television would not have been a strange thought. Consider, for example, the Bijlmer disaster in 1992, the floods in Limburg in 1993 and the fireworks disaster in Enschede in 2000. In all these cases, she chose to visit the affected areas to show her support to the victims, instead of a speech .

“Beatrix is known to not like television cameras,” says reporter Royal House Kysia Hekster. “In the Netherlands, for example, the Christmas speech was only broadcast on television for the first time in 2000, and during state visits she was also not allowed to be filmed during the press interview. Willem-Alexander deals with it a little easier. It is all part of it for him.”
