The collaboration between 35-year-old soccer star Lionel Messi and French club Paris Saint-Germain ends after two years without success in the Champions League.
Originally, a contract extension was in the room, but the negotiations failed due to Messi’s unwillingness to agree to a salary cut. Coach Christophe Galtier confirmed that Saturday’s game against Clermont will be Messi’s last appearance for the club.
With this announcement, speculations about Messi’s future are back on track. Three scenarios seem plausible: a return to FC Barcelona, a move to David Beckham’s MLS club Inter Miami or a multi-million dollar transfer to the Saudi club Al-Hilal. Inter Miami have been interested in Messi for a long time, reportedly offering the Argentine a four-year deal with an annual salary of €50m. A home in Miami and the presence of compatriots at the club could provide further incentives for the move.
Another possibility would be that Messi signs with Inter Miami and is loaned out to his former club FC Barcelona for 12 or 18 months. This would allow the financially troubled Catalans to pay his salary before he ends his career in North America. Alternatively, a lucrative move to Al-Hilal could also be considered as Messi already works as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia. Such a change would have a total volume of 1.2 billion euros.
