Spectacular Images of the Big Apple Shrouded in Clouds – NBC New York (47)

The Big Apple woke up on Friday wrapped in a dense veil of clouds. The skyscrapers were hidden by fog predicted by the National Weather Service (NWS) office.

A severe storm system is forecast to hit our region Friday night. The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for a large swath of northern New Jersey.

The tornado watch is in effect until 7 p.m. for Burlington, Hunterdon, Monmouth, Salem, Warren, Camden, Mercer, Morris, Somerset, Gloucester, Middelsex, Ocean and Sussex counties.

While some strong storms could reach New Jersey around 4 pm, these storms will move east toward New York City; however, cooler air will weaken the storm system.

Rain could start in New York City around 5 p.m. Heavier downpours, gusty winds and thunderstorms will move through New York City between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The showers will taper off Friday night to make way for unseasonably warm temperatures for the weekend. Dangerous heat advisories have been issued for northeastern New Jersey and the northern suburbs of New York City, as it can feel like 100 degrees in some areas on Saturday. Actual air temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s.

Sunday will be partly sunny with another round of near-record high temperatures for the afternoon. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the day as a cold front makes its way into the region from the west. Highs will be 92 in the city, low to the mid-80s in the suburbs.

Monday will be partly sunny with a chance of scattered showers as cooler air moves into the region. Highs will be 74 in the city, mid-70s in the suburbs. Tuesday will be mostly sunny and pleasant as high pressure will dominate the region’s weather. The high temperature will be 70 in the city, low 70 in the suburbs.

Wednesday will be partly cloudy and cooler as an off shore wind will develop during the afternoon. The high temperature will be 68 in the city, upper 60 in the suburbs. Thursday will be sunny early with increasing clouds later in the day. There is a chance of showers as a front will move into the area from the west. The high temperature will be 75 in the city, mid-70s in the suburbs.
