Coast Guard Imposes Temporary Restrictions on ohio River in Cincinnati for ‘America’s River Roots’ Events
CINCINNATI,OH – The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the port Sector Ohio Valley has announced a temporary special local regulation governing vessel traffic on the Ohio River in Cincinnati, effective from 6 a.m.on October 8, 2025, through 3 a.m. on October 13, 2025. The restrictions are designed to ensure the safety of participants and spectators during the “America’s River Roots” festival, a series of events including fireworks displays, boat parades, and races.
This regulation impacts all vessels operating within a defined area of the Ohio River in Cincinnati. while vessels registered as participants in the event are unaffected, all others will be subject to restrictions and may require authorization from the Captain of the Port (COTP) or a designated representative to enter, transit, anchor, or remain within the regulated zone. The Coast Guard is proactively managing potential congestion and hazards associated with the popular festival to protect life and property.
The regulated area encompasses specific portions of the Ohio River, as detailed in the official notice. non-participating vessels seeking permission to enter the area can contact the COTP via VHF-FM radio channel 16 or by phone at 1-800-253-7465. any vessel granted access must proceed at no-wake speed and adhere to all lawful directions issued by the COTP or their representatives.
Spectator vessels hailed by official patrol boats are required to stop promptly and comply with all instructions, with potential for citation for non-compliance. The Patrol Commander, reachable on VHF-FM Channel 16 using the call sign “PATCOM,” has the authority to control vessel movement and even terminate the event if deemed necessary for safety.
The Coast Guard will issue advanced notice of specific enforcement dates and times through broadcast notices to mariners and on-scene representatives. This temporary regulation will only be enforced during active “America’s River Roots” events. Captain R. L.
