Special issue 13 – A tool for history studies • PM

How do we make history today? A new type of textbook provides a very interesting panorama!

Pierre Chastang and Catherine Rideau-Kikuchi at the microphone of Passion Médiévistes

This special episode is devoted to a book that should be of interest to all those who want to study history and / or be interested in how history is made today. Its title is Initiation to historical studies, published on October 28, 2020 by Éditions Nouveau Monde.

To talk about this book, both bookish and digital, I have the pleasure of having two guests (which is quite rare in this podcast): Catherine Rideau-Kikuchi, lecturer at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin in medieval history (which you had already heard in the special issue on received ideas), and Pierre Chastang, professor of medieval history at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

This manual is a step in historiography, a way of showing how to make history in 2021.

Initiation to historical studies (New World editions)

The book is both a theoretical book on how to do history and very practical with lots of examples, but also a transperiod approach, from Antiquity to the 21st century, including of course the Middle Ages and modern times. It is associated with a collaborative Open Access web platform which can be very useful for students and teachers.

To give you an overview of the content of the book:

  • Part 1: The historian, his tools, his sources
  • Part 2: Periods and major areas of history
  • Part 3: The making of history (the methods)
  • Part 4: Approaches, confluences, debates (hot historiography).

In the episode we talk about the different parts, the genesis of the book, as well as tips for using this manual.
