Special aura and unforeseen weather – Liepaja Lake Music concert season opened / Article / LSM.lv

Despite the heavy rains, on Sunday, July 5, the first concert of this summer on the water cycle “Liepaja Lake Music” was performed on Lake Liepāja, where musicians Mārcis Auziņš delighted the listeners with guitar sounds.

In total, in July and August, eight stylistically different concert programs will be offered to the listeners on the floating stage, inviting both young musicians from Liepaja and already acclaimed artists, such as Vestards Šimkas and Aminats.

The idea of ”Liepaja Lake Music” concert cycles was created a few years ago, when, uniting professional musicians and event organizers, an unprecedented musical tradition was started in the city, offering residents to enjoy concerts on Lake Liepāja during the summer. It was usual that the first concerts took place in June, but this year the whole schedule changed due to the coronavirus.

Although the security measures introduced to restrict Covid-19 mean that the concerts could not take place in June, the concert organizers did not worry about it, says Irita Kalēja, the project manager of SIA “Liepaja Music”. “Since we have outdoor activities, we have a large territory, we have Lake Liepāja, then these rules are not softer for us, but easier to comply with,” explains Kalēja.

Last year, with the support of the municipality, a floating stage was built with a lifting and lowering roof. Electricity for musicians is provided by batteries. In turn, visitors to the event measure the waterway from the shore to the stage on the lake with catamarans, boats or rafts.

The listeners of the first concert admit that this type of event has a special aura.

“We have never been to such a concert, we want to raft, watch a concert. Liepāja without water is unimaginable, secondly, it is unexpected, because you never know what the weather will be like or whether it will be the big winds of Liepāja, thirdly, there is wonderful acoustics on the water, ”says the concert visitor Iveta.

“I haven’t been to any concerts or theaters since March 15, I’ve come to visit, and how can I not take that opportunity,” says Dace, a concert attendee.

Irita Kalēja says that people are thirsty for culture:

“This Covid time has only benefited both creatives and listeners – they are able to appreciate cultural values. ”

This summer, musicians in the Lake Music program have been selected to represent different genres. Academic music will be performed by Vestards Šimkus, while pop music will be performed by Aminata. Bands “Saldās sejas”, “Keksi” and “Latvian Blues Band”, as well as several young musicians from Liepāja will also take the floating stage.

Guitarist Mārcis Auziņš says about his concert program, which was performed on July 5: original music, ending with cover versions of foreign hits. “
