Sparkasse aims to be CO2 neutral by 2035 – Freiburg

The Sparkasse Freiburg-Nrdlicher Breisgau is serious about climate protection and sets itself ambitious goals.

The Sparkasse wants to intensify its activities for more sustainability and has recorded this in a voluntary commitment, as it reports. In it, it undertakes to continue business operations until 2035 CO2– to be neutral, to align financing and own investments to climate goals and to support commercial and private customers in the transformation to a climate-friendly economy.

The starting point of the self-commitment is the Paris climate protection agreement. Countries around the world set themselves the goal of limiting global warming to “well below” two degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial era – if possible even to 1.5 degrees Celsius. “Out of social responsibility and with a view to the livelihoods of future generations, we have to protect the ecological basis of our coexistence,” said CEO Marcel Thimm.

The concept of sustainability was already laid out in the history of the Sparkasse’s origins, with the principle of a business policy oriented towards the common good and not maximizing profit and the mandate to supply people and companies in the business area with banking services. In future, the focus will be more on climate change and its consequences, and measures that have already been implemented would have to be strengthened.
