Spanish league shut down indefinitely due to corona crisis NOW

La Liga and the Spanish Football Association have decided on Monday to stop the national professional leagues indefinitely. The competitions will not resume until the health organizations give the green light.

La Liga was shut down until early April due to the outbreak of the corona virus. The number of confirmed infections in Spain is now at 33,089 and 2,182 people have already died of the COVID-19 virus.

“Everyone agrees that the league should be suspended until the competent authorities believe that football can be played again and health risks are eliminated,” La Liga and the Spanish Football Association RFEF write in a joint statement.

This decision keeps the chances that the season can be finished. In any case, the 28th, 29th and 30th round must be made up. Orange-international players Frenkie de Jong (FC Barcelona), Luuk de Jong (Seville) and Jasper Cillessen (Valencia), among others, play in Spain.

Multiple players from Valencia, who recently played against Atalanta in the Champions League, are infected with the corona virus. On Saturday it was announced that former Real Madrid chairman Lorenzo Sanz has died of the virus.

La Liga is not the only European league to stop for the time being. In any case, the Premier League and the Belgian Jupiler Pro League will not be played until April 30. In the Eredivisie, for example, the play ban is valid until the beginning of April.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezes and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
