Spanish Governance Agreement Provides Advantages for Minho

Spanish politics have suffered from the instability of the results of the last two elections to the Government, failing to win the PSOE, the winning party, a majority that allows it to take the reins of the country.

Pedro Sanchez, the current interim prime minister, appears to be on the brink of resolving the stalemate through a deal with the different leftist parties (and some independentists) in order to be legitimized in his post since 2018.

One of the parties involved in this government agreement is the Galician Nationalist Bloc, whose deputy Néstor Rego may have a say in Sanchez’s investiture. But for that, the Galician wants to see some measures taken that bring Galicia closer to Portugal.

In the agreement of the Block, it is requested to “accelerate the modernization” of the railway line between Vigo and Valença, already on the Portuguese side of the border. Another prediction for the coming years, should the PSOE maintain stable governance, is the guarantee of a reduction in tolls on the A9, which links Ferrol (northern Galicia) with Valencia.

Another of the measures envisaged in the agreement is to facilitate the broadcasting of Portuguese radio and television channels in the territory of Galicia, a measure that was already foreseen since 2014, in the well-known “Paz-Andrade Law”, but was not implemented by the Spanish rulers.

This last measure will serve to promote the Galician language to the detriment of Castilian, since the Galicians share the linguistics with the Portuguese, especially those from the upper Minho region.

According to the newspaper Public, Television of Galicia (TVG) agreed with RTP to create joint fiction and entertainment content, as is the case of the program “Aqui Portugal” in Galician territory.

The Block also wants to see Galicia guaranteed the same rights as Catalonia, if there is any agreement that changes the territorial structure of the Spanish state.

This was one of several agreements signed between the socialist workers and various regionalist parties, the most popular being the one signed with the Republican Left of Catalonia, whose leader is serving an effective prison sentence for movements against the Spanish state for independence. Pedro Sánchez’s investiture is scheduled for Tuesday, with 167 favorable votes against 164.
