Spanish Coast Guard rescued 14 from the sea near Mallorca

Earlier on Monday, it was reported that the Spanish Coast Guard had rescued three people from the sea while eleven others had died when they were picked up off the island of Cabrera south of Mallorca.

A few hours later, the authorities announced that the information was incorrect and that all 14 people had been rescued and were alive.

In recent weeks, an ever-increasing number of refugees and migrants have tried to cross the Mediterranean to the Balearic Islands or mainland Spain. Last week, the Spanish Coast Guard rescued 277 people in 24 hours.

The Balearic Islands include Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.
