Spain with 47 dead and 2002 positive cases of coronavirus

Spain has so far registered 47 deaths from the new coronavirus as of Wednesday and 2002 people are infected, mostly in the Madrid region, according to the figures updated by the Spanish Ministry of Health.

According to the advanced figures, of the 2002 positive cases, about 50% are concentrated in Madrid, and about 78% in the four most affected autonomous communities: Madrid, Basque Country, La Rioja and Catalonia.

On the other hand, 31 of the 47 people who died with the epidemic, that is to say about 66%, died in Madrid, the region where many of the most serious accidents are taken.

The director of the Center for the Coordination of Health and Emergency Alerts, Fernando Simon, also pointed out that there are 126 people in intensive care units, 81% of them in the Community of Madrid, and that there have already been 136 patients who were considered cured after being beaten the disease.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced today the call for the Conference of Presidents of the autonomous communities for next Saturday, by videoconference, to address the coronavirus crisis.

In Spain, the autonomous communities have their own competence in matters of health policy and take measures, which are announced daily, regardless of those decided by the central government.

For example, Madrid ordered the closure of libraries, theaters, cultural centers and municipal sports centers for fifteen days, starting next Thursday.

This decision joins the closure of kindergartens, schools, colleges and universities that applies from tomorrow today.

The autonomous community of Catalonia also announced today that from Thursday and for fifteen days, extendable according to circumstances, any activity that brings together more than a thousand people, whether open or closed, will be suspended or postponed.

The president of the Generalitat (regional government) of the Valencian Community, Ximo Puig, also announced on Tuesday the postponement to a date to be communicated later on from the Fallas, a typical Valencia party well known in Spain, which would take place from 15 to 19 March close, also due to the coronavirus epidemic.

The Covid-19 epidemic was detected in December in China and has already claimed more than 4,200 deaths.

Portugal registers 49 confirmed cases of infection, according to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).
