Storm Claudia Brings Severe Weather to Spain, Canary Islands Heavily Impacted
madrid, Spain – A powerful storm system, dubbed Claudia, is unleashing disruptive weather across Spain, prompting warnings in thirteen regions including teh Canary Islands. The Spanish weather service, AEMET, is closely monitoring the situation as strong winds, heavy rainfall, high waves, and localized thunderstorms sweep the country, with the western and northern areas expected to bear the brunt of the storm.
The Canary Islands are currently experiencing the most significant impacts. La Palma has already recorded rainfall totals reaching approximately 100 liters per square meter in a short period, leading to school closures and advisories for residents to remain indoors unless essential. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are also bracing for strong wind gusts and potential thunderstorms.
Beyond the islands, warnings are in effect for provinces within Andalusia, Castile and Leon, Galicia, Madrid, Aragon, and Extremadura.Especially concerning are mountainous areas in the south of Salamanca, and the provinces of Cáceres and Ávila, where rainfall could exceed 150 liters per square meter, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides.
Coastal regions, including Almeria, Cádiz, Huelva, La Coruña, Pontevedra, and both Canary provinces, are facing dangerous wave conditions. Authorities are urging the public to avoid rocky shorelines due to the potential for unexpectedly powerful and forceful waves.
Localized thunderstorms are also a threat,particularly in Huelva,Seville,and parts of the Canary Islands,bringing the risk of heavy downpours accompanied by lightning and strong wind gusts.
