Eastern Spain on high Alert as Storm Alice Threatens Renewed Flooding
VALENCIA, SPAIN – October 9, 2024 – Eastern Spain is bracing for further disruption as Storm alice unleashes heavy rainfall, triggering weather alerts across multiple regions. Following recent devastating floods in Valencia and the Balearic Islands, authorities are warning of “extraordinary danger” and potential flash floods.
An orange weather alert is currently in effect for coastal areas of the Valencia region, as well as Ibiza and Formentera. Yellow warnings are also active in eastern Catalonia, Murcia, central Valencia, and Castilla-La Mancha. Intense rains, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, are expected.
The situation is forecast to escalate on Friday, October 10th, with red alerts issued for Alicante, the Campo de Cartagena, and Mazarrón. These areas could see torrential rains of up to 180 litres per square metre within 12 hours. The maximum alert level will be in effect between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., with surrounding regions remaining at orange alert, signifying “notable risk.”
The Balearic Islands are also on alert, particularly Ibiza and formentera, were up to 100 litres per square metre of rain is anticipated. Classes have been suspended for the day on Thursday in these islands, and authorities are advising residents to avoid outdoor activities and large gatherings.
Storm alice has already brought significant rainfall to the Valencia region early Thursday, with L’Albufera de Valencia recording 44.8 litres per square metre and Catarroja, a town previously severely impacted by flooding, receiving 39.8 litres.
These storms follow recent flooding in Valencia and the Balearics caused by Storm Gabrielle at the end of September.Authorities note that intense autumn rainfall appears to be increasing in frequency along Spain’s eastern coast and in the Valencia region.
The agency warned on X,”Extraordinary danger. Flooding and flash floods may occur. Follow the advice of civil protection.” Orange alerts will remain in place on Saturday, October 11th, along the coast of Valencia, Murcia, and southern Catalonia, with yellow alerts continuing for inland and coastal areas of Castellón, Valencia, and Alicante.
