Spain reports second death linked to monkeypox

Spanish reported a second related death monkey pox the second on Saturday (30/7).

This report brings the number of monkeypox deaths outside African countries to three to date.

It is known, Spain and Brazil both announced the first death related to monkeypox on Friday (29/7). However, it is not yet clear whether monkeypox was the real cause of the three deaths or not.

Spanish authorities are still carrying out autopsies, while Brazilian authorities say the patient who died suffered from other serious conditions.

According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, the country is one of the hardest hit in the world with 4,298 people infected with the virus.

“Among the 3,750 patients (monkeypox) … 120 were hospitalized and two died,” the Spanish Ministry of Health reported. AFP, Saturday.

The report said the victims were two young men. Research is also underway to gather more epidemiological information on the two cases.

“With the continued spread of monkeypox in Europe, we expect to see more deaths,” said Catherine Smallwood, Senior Emergency Officer at WHO Europe, in a statement.

Catherine said the goal should be to stop transmission quickly in Europe and stop the monkeypox epidemic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says more than 18,000 cases have been detected worldwide outside Africa since early May.


Monkeypox-related deaths in Brazil

Meanwhile, Brazil said a man with monkeypox died in the capital of the southeastern Minas Gerais state, Belo Horizonte, on Thursday (28/7).

In a statement, the Minas Gerais state health ministry said the patient was receiving hospital treatment for another serious condition.

“It is important to underline that he has serious comorbidities, so as not to spread panic in the community. The mortality rate is very low for monkeypox,” said Minas Gerais Health Secretary, Fabio Baccheretti.

Baccheretti added that the patient was undergoing cancer treatment.

On the one hand, Brazil’s Ministry of Health has recorded nearly 1,000 cases of monkeypox, mostly in the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
