Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) has expressed skepticism about the corona pandemic, whether in the coming winter carnival can take place. As the “Rheinische Post” reported, the CDU politician said on Tuesday in a telephone conference of the health committee: “I was a child prince myself and come from a carnival stronghold. So I know how important carnival is for millions of Germans. But: I can Carnival this winter, in the middle of the pandemic, simply do not imagine. That is bitter, but it is.

The newspaper relies on information from participants. According to information from the German Press Agency, members of the committee asked Spahn what he said about family celebrations and celebrations and what this would mean with a view to the carnival. Spahn had suggested to speak again about the permitted sizes of private parties because of the risk of infection.

Rejection would be “an economic disaster”

The Cologne Carnival Festival Committee spoke out against canceling the carnival at this point in time. “You don’t have to forbid what is supposed to take place in six months,” said Michael Kramp, spokesman for the festival committee, the umbrella organization for most of Cologne’s carnival clubs. “We do not consider a blanket cancellation several months before the session to be very effective”, added the President of the Festival Committee, Christoph Kuckelkorn.

A cancellation would be “an economic disaster” for the strongholds, said the President of the Federation of German Carnival (BDK), Karl-Ludwig Fess, of the “Rheinische Post”. He asked Spahn to invite the federal association and regional representatives to a round table. “Health comes first, even for us carnivalists,” said Fess, “but before events are canceled, there must be discussions about it.”

The Cologne carnivalists did not want to celebrate at any price, emphasized Kramp. If the number of infections continues to increase in the near future and the Corona Protection Ordinance is tightened again, for example so that only groups of up to ten people are allowed to meet, then carnival celebrations are of course not possible. But that cannot be foreseen at the moment, said Kramp. (dpa / fra)

Health Minister Jens Spahn calls for compliance with the measures to protect against Covid 19 infection. There are currently many cases apparently at celebrations and in a sociable atmosphere.
