Flemish Member of Parliament Hannes Anaf (sp.a) reacts very critically to a number of statements made yesterday by Flemish Minister of Welfare Wouter Beke (CD&V) in the ‘Pano’ report about mouth masks. “Apparently there is planet Earth and planet Beke when you hear the minister”, it sounds.
The report showed, among other things, that the strategic stock with tens of millions of mouth masks was destroyed in 2015 and 2018. Pano recovered a remnant of that stock, had the mouth masks tested and determined that they are still in excellent condition. According to experts, the masks could have saved human lives during the first corona wave.
The fact that Flemish Minister of Welfare Wouter Beke also appeared to fall out of the blue in the report, opposition party sp.a finds unbelievable. “Flanders already knew through the Risk Management Group on 6 February that the emergency stock had been destroyed and urgently needed to be replaced”, says Anaf.
“How unworldly can you be?”
In the report, Beke also wonders whether there have been many real shortages of mouth masks in the Flemish residential care centers. “I think there have been many imminent shortages, but that there have been hardly any effective shortages,” said the CD&V minister.
“How strange can you be to say that there was no shortage of mouth masks in the nursing homes?” Anaf wonders. “Not only the images, but also the inquiries of the Belgian Federation of Healthcare Professionals and the testimonies in the report of the Flemish Ombudsman Service speak for themselves. Hell, lives were lost due to the lack of protective material.”
