Southport, N.C. – A shooting at a waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina, late Saturday night left three people dead and eight others injured, according to city officials. The incident occurred at the American Fish Company, an outdoor venue at the Southport Yacht Basin.
The shooting began around 9:30 p.m. when an individual on a boat traveling up the Cape Fear River opened fire on the bar, ChyAnn Ketchum, Southport’s public information officer, stated.The boat then continued up the Intracoastal Waterway. Authorities quickly issued a warning via Facebook just before 10 p.m.,advising residents to avoid the waterfront area and shelter in their homes due to reports of an active shooter.
Shortly after 10:00 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard located a suspect matching the shooter’s description at the public boat ramp on NE 55th Street in Oak Island. The Coast Guard detained the individual, who is now in the custody of the Oak Island Police Department and will be transferred to the Southport Police Department for questioning, with assistance from the State Bureau of Inquiry, Ketchum saeid.
Southport, a coastal city of approximately 4,300 residents, is located near the mouth of the Cape Fear River.The investigation is ongoing.
