Southport, N.C. – A shooting at the Southport Yacht Basin late Saturday night left three people dead and eight others injured, authorities reported. A suspect is in custody following the incident, which unfolded around 9:30 p.m.at the American Fish Company.
The shooting has deeply impacted the coastal North Carolina community of Southport, raising concerns about safety and security in a typically tranquil area. The incident prompted an immediate response from local police, the Coast Guard, and emergency medical services, and an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack. According to police reports, the gunfire originated from a boat occupied by a single individual. Following the shooting, the vessel fled toward Oak Island, where the Coast Guard apprehended a suspect.The eight injured individuals were transported to a local hospital; their conditions remain unknown as of Sunday morning.
Southport Police Chief Todd Coring addressed the community overnight, offering reassurance. “We just ask that you keep those who have been affected by this in your prayers and your thoughts,” Coring stated. “To our community tonight, I am cozy to say that we feel there is no additional threat to the community right now.”
Authorities have indicated a person of interest is currently being questioned in connection with the shooting. The Southport city government issued an emergency notice via social media shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday, alerting residents to the situation.
