South Korea Prints Highest Covid Record, Translucent 5,123 Cases

South Korea record case Covid-19 the highest daily rate during the pandemic with 5,123 corona virus infections reported in the 24 hours to Wednesday (1/12).

The South Korean Agency for Disease Control and Prevention (KDCA) has brought the total number of people infected with the corona virus in South Korea to 452,350 cases with 3,658 deaths.

According to data in site KDCA, hospitalization rates are also increasing. However, the mortality rate remains relatively low, at 0.81 percent.

Severe symptomatic cases in South Korea also increased rapidly compared to early November. At that time, patients with severe symptoms in South Korea were only around 400 cases.

More than 84 percent of patients with severe symptoms of the corona virus are currently in the range of 60 years and over. Experts also mentioned that the antibodies from the vaccine received by the elderly were reduced. They appealed to parents to get a booster vaccine.

Overall, hospitals in South Korea are currently treating 723 COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms.

One of the South Korean health officials, Son Young-rae, said that ICU beds in Seoul were occupied by 89.2 percent. Local authorities also plan to supply more beds for the ICU.

South Korea’s Minister of Home Affairs and Security, Jeon Hae-cheol, said that the government plans to provide at least 1,300 hospital beds by mid-December.

In addition, the South Korean government has also decided to make home care the standard for COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms. Only patients with severe symptoms are recommended to be treated at the hospital. Residential care centers will also be expanded.

Due to the spike in Covid-19 cases and the threat of the spread of the Omicron variant, the South Korean government decided to cancel the easing of restrictions.

South Korea itself has fully vaccinated nearly 80 percent of its population. The country will also begin administering a booster vaccine for adults 18 to 49 years of age.

Previously, South Korea also tightened borders for several African countries due to the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. These countries are South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique and Malawi.

KDCA stated that the issuance of visas for those who came from the eight countries had been restricted since Sunday (28/11). Meanwhile, South Koreans returning from the region will be quarantined.
