South Korea Approves AstraZeneca Vaccine Use for All Ages

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

South Korea will issue emergency permission of use (emergency use authorisation/ us) corona vaccine artificial AstraZeneca for all age groups, including seniors over 65 years.

Deputy Health Minister Kim Gan-lip said in a press conference on Wednesday (10/2) that the AstraZeneca vaccine authorization would be issued after the company submitted the complete clinical trial results.

“However, we have added cautionary limitations to the use of vaccines in people aged 65 and over,” said Kim.

If approved, AstraZeneca will become the first corona vaccine company to pocket a license for use in South Korea.

Quoting Reuters, Kim said that his party had asked to receive the results of clinical trials conducted by AstraZeneca last April on 30 thousand people in the US. The study involved about 7,500 elderly.

Several European countries have warned that the AstraZeneca vaccine should only be given to those aged 18 to 64 years. The permission granted by South Korea raised concerns about the effectiveness of the vaccine for seniors aged 65 years and over.

In the early stages, South Korea prioritized vaccine injections for the elderly and medical workers.

AstraZeneca and the head of clinical trials at the University of Oxford said the vaccine could trigger a good immune response in older people.

South Korea’s Agency for Disease Control and Prevention (KDCA) said vaccinations would begin on February 26 using 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine.

South Korea aims to inoculate about 10 million high-risk people by July and achieve immortality (herd immunity) in November.

KDCA is currently reviewing the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine against a new variant of the corona virus from the UK and South Africa.

In the run-up to the Chinese New Year celebrations, South Korea noted a decrease in daily coronavirus infections. Until now, the total corona infection has become 81,930 cases and 1,486 deaths.
