South Africa: Protests against Covid-19 vaccine trials

In Johannesburg, there were dozens on the streets to express their disagreement with the first clinical trials for a vaccine against the pandemic of the new coronavirus in progress in their country.

“It goes against all protocols. And even if people will consent, there must be informed consent. It is a form of violation of a person’s body. It is a form of rape. It’s not acceptable. So the vaccination period, whether in China or Italy, is not acceptable. But the logic is that the tests are done in the epicentres of the disease in the world, ”says protester Sean Goss.

The first trial of the coronavirus vaccine on the continent started in South Africa last week. It is part of a trial already underway in the United Kingdom. ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 is a vaccine developed by the University of Oxford.

We feel that our government does not support traditional medicine, nor does it recognize the work of traditional healers

Some 2,000 volunteers from this southern African country participate. Members of the Organization of Traditional Healers also came to support the protest.

“We feel that our government does not support traditional medicine, nor does it recognize the work of traditional healers, because there are many things that traditional healers could produce that could help the COVID-19. So we have a feeling that the government does not support traditional medicine, ”said Seloane Mokgatsi, a member of the organization of traditional healers.

South East Africa is the country most affected by covid-19 with more than 159,000 confirmed cases. Overall, the continent has more than 400,000 cases.
