Souleymane Bachir Diagne, philosopher in New York

Published on :

Souleymane Bachir Diagne is told in two episodes, at the microphone of Valérie Nivelon, in the Harlem district where he ended up putting down his suitcases. Rich in cultures from three continents, Africa, Europe and the United States, he is one of the major intellectual figures of our time.

A specialist in Islamic philosophy and the history of science, Souleymane Bachir Diagne revisits his childhood as a young Senegalese born in Saint-Louis-du-Senegal, who grew up in Ziguinchor and became a teenager in Dakar in the 1970s, before discovering the America of racial violence in the 1980s. Educated in the tradition of a Sufi and literate Islam, Souleymane Bachir Diagne is a specialist in Islamic philosophy but also in the history of science. At the initiative of the Africanization of the teaching of philosophy at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, he hesitates for a long time before accepting a first post in the United States where he is offered to participate in the creation of the Studies African.

With humor, modesty and sincerity, the brilliant spirit of Souleymane Bachir Diagne allows a fruitful dialogue between rationality and mysticism.
