As early as January 2019, Aldi called on startups to suggest their ideas for the nationwide Aldi branches. According to the Aldi press office, over 80 applications came in, nine of which were invited to the pitch. The contract was then awarded to three startups, including John John, who proposed these backpacks – albeit in paper format.
The problem with paper backpacks: They are hardly reusable, the bag backpacks are used after just one use. That was not sustainable enough for Aldi, people wanted reusable backpacks. This is how the backpacks were made from a fabric that is reminiscent of textiles; in fact, it is not a recycled material, but rather a raw material (100% polypropylene).
