Sold Super Mario games for a record price of 5.6 million

After dusting off in a desk drawer for 35 years, an unopened copy of the Nintendo game Super Mario Bros. has been sold for as much as 660,000 dollars – or 5.6 million kroner – at auction.

This is the largest amount a game has ever been sold for, according to an update from Heritage Auctions who was in charge of the auction.

The previous record was “only” 974,000 kroner for a Mega Man game from 1987. The same year was also Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out !! purchased for 872,000 kroner.

The Nintendo game was bought back in 1986 as a Christmas gift, and has remained untouched in a drawer until the owner found it earlier this year.

– It has been on the bottom of my desk drawer ever since the day I bought it. I never thought about it, says the unidentified seller in the press release.

The game was professionally approved and received a rating of 9.6 or A + and is described as “the best copy known to have been auctioned off”, according to Heritage.

– Finding a similar specimen like this is like looking for one particular drop in the ocean. Never say never, but there is a good chance it is not feasible, says Valerie McLeckie, gaming expert at Heritage, to CNN.
