The contamination was discovered because the petrol station on the Rijksweg in Mook is receiving another operator and a soil investigation has been carried out. An area of approximately one hundred square meters under and around the petrol station was found to be contaminated, of which forty square meters were severely contaminated, mainly by volatile aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene and xylenes. The substances have been found up to 7 meters deep.
The risk of spreading is minimal, but we are keeping a close eye on the pulse and if there is an indication that it will spread, we will take action.
It was also found that one of the petrol pipes may have started leaking around 1995, during the last refurbishment and expansion of the filling station.
