Society – New York should get an LGBTQ + museum – Society

New York (AP) – In the presence of the former professional tennis player and activist Billie Jean King, the foundation stone for a new LGBTQ + museum was laid in New York.

For the museum, which is supposed to tell the stories of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans people, queer people and others who feel they belong, the New York Historical Society will be expanded to include an extension, which is due to open in 2024. The Historical Society, founded at the beginning of the 19th century, has dedicated itself above all to the history of the metropolis of New York.

“We’re so glad the museum has found a home,” said 77-year-old King. “It is our time, for our American LGBTQ + community, to tell our stories.” The whole world will pay attention to the museum, said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “People from all corners of the world will come and learn that change is possible and that it happened here in New York.”

The 1969 New York Stonewall riots, when revelers fought a police raid at the popular Stonewall Inn gay bar on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, are widely considered to be the movement’s birth. Every year around the world, parades are held to commemorate this and celebrate the self-confidence of the LGBTQ community and their resistance to discrimination.
